Assignment #1
The articles concerning the nature of design briefs are only meant for general guidance. They are not rigorously developed but they are representative of what is understood to be good design drafts in everyday practice. Below is an outline for the design brief your design team is asked to use. The final section (6) is not to be included in your brief but would be part of a real-world document.Assignment 1 - Communicating through the millennia
Along with the energy benefits associated with nuclear power comes the problem of disposing of nuclear waste. This is a problem not only for current generations but will present hazards for generations well beyond the foreseeable future. In this assignment you are not asked to solve the problem of nuclear waste storage, rather you are asked to prepare a design brief that will orient designers tasked with designing a communication system warning future generations of the location and danger of nuclear waste sites. Accidental or intentional human intrusion into radioactive waste sites is considered to be one the most critical threats to the health of future generations. The communication system to be designed will need to have a span of 10 millennia—the duration of the danger posed by the nuclear materials.Assignment 1 - Communicating through the millennia
1. agency (i.e. clients, decision makers, stake holders etc.).
2. general strategy for approach to design.
3. systems assessment of challenge (i.e. context, environment, elements etc.).
4. limits of project (i.e. judgments of boundary of challenge, priorities etc.).
5. performance specifications (i.e. indicators of successful design).
The issues to be considered in preparing the brief are many and wide-ranging. You will work in assigned teams of three to produce one brief from each team. We anticipate that you will discover many of the issues to be addressed in your brief through group conversation. Your work will then be to structure those issues within a coherent document that will frame the work of the eventual communication system designers. The brief is only expected to be a draft and not a comprehensive document. It should be more like an executive summary than a full presentation. The brief should be no more than10 pages in length inclusive of graphics.
Use the articles on nuclear waste communication issues as starting points for the exploration of the issue as understood by present day decision makers.
